Overdenture Bars

Bar systems may be utilized for overdentures, removable partial dentures, and implant prosthesis. Bars may be rigid or resilient, permitting free movement of the prosthesis to direct forces away from the retaining abutments to the supportive bone and tissue. Bars provide more stability and retention than studs with the additional benefit of abutment splinting. Bar systems are generally in one of three types:

  1. Direct Retainers, such as the Hader or Dolder bar systems
  2. Incorporated into the bar, such as Locator or Clix bar attachments.
  3. Offset attachments, such as the Plunger Loc, Sagix, or Vertix.

The shape of the bar is indicated by the amount of room available, by the shape of the alveolar ridge, and the type of construction. Do not engage labial soft tissue undercuts with the denture base flange, as this will alter the path of insertion and cause excessive wear and servicing requirements.

The Hader Bar and rider system is the most popular of all bar systems due to its economy and simplicity.

  • The system allows the prosthesis to rotate around the bar.
  • Hader bars provide both stability and retention.
  • Common application is processing the Hader Metal Housings into the denture utilizing the Hader Processing Spacers, and then using one of the four grips of plastic Hader clips in the metal housings.
  • Relines or making a new prosthesis is made easy by using the Hader White Delrin Analog or Aluminum Analog.
  • Choose either the thin (0.2mm) metal housings for accurate seating of the plastic clips or the new Alignment Housings.

When utilized with the metal housings, adjusting retention for the patient is simple–remove the present clip and insert the proper retention clip.

The Ackermann clip is an universal precious metal clip or rider that will fit the Hader, Dolder, and Round bar. The Ackermann clip features adjustable retention, easy patient insertion and removal, while requiring less vertical space due to its horizontal or vertical retention tangs.

Image result for arrow symbol Due to its short (3.6mm) length, the sleeve may be positioned on the bar even in a deep narrow trough. No soldering of the clip is required.

The castable plastic and plasti-wax patterns are available in profiles of the Hader and Round bars to facilitate the use of non-precious alloys and direct casting. The plastic wax burnout patterns are recommended when using a fast burnout technique.

All are available in packages of 4 to facilitate the shaping and contouring of bars to the individual anatomy. The bars are approximately 6 cm long. The diameter is 1.8 mm for Hader and round bars.
